An asset is a physical or virtual resource used to complete a business process. It includes items such as software, hardware, and infrastructure that an organization owns or controls. Configuration items are configuration records used to manage the operational status of assets in the CMDB.
Within Configuration Management Database (CMDB) there exists relationships between assets and configurations that enable a clear understanding of how those assets support the business process.
For example, if you were managing a Software asset and associated configuration items, then you would have a relationship between the asset and its configuration item that would indicate which releases of software were in your inventory.
The relationship would also indicate what other software was installed on those specific machines with that specific release number for each machine and for each release number for each machine.
