Within the EXM platform, an asset type is the classification of a piece of hardware or software. There are many different types of assets, but typically an asset type could refer to computer servers, software applications, network devices, and so on.
When an organization is using the CMDB to track their IT Assets they are creating an inventory of their equipment and software that allows them to follow it as well as collaborate and share resources across different people and departments.
What’s more important than tracking these assets directly is the ability to understand how each asset can be utilized in order to increase business productivity. This would include understanding what workflows need access to these assets as well as what kinds of tasks can be accomplished by each one. It also includes understanding what other systems need to be connected with these assets in order for them to operate effectively.
For example, a company may have a database that needs connections with a number of different servers in order for it work. These criteria help identify the appropriate asset types so IT managers can better create an overall strategy for how best to support their tools from both within the enterprise team and across organizations.
